Bright Young Things
January/February 2012
Fresh graduates usually head for jobs in MNCs which are perceived as more prestigious and offer higher pay. But there are some who prefer to work in an SME, where things are less hierarchical and there are more opportunities. A management associate trainee at HMI Health Management International, Ms Foo Kah Mun, who graduated with an economics degree from NTU in July 2011, said that the Management Associate Programme (MAP) attracted her to go for an SME. Despite her parents' hopes for her to join the government sector, she chose to stick to HMI and has now been in the company for about six months. She had no qualms about joining HMI as she saw that she had the opportunity to gain more knowledge with the MAP. The programme allows graduates to rotate in different departments over the span of one year before finally settling into a fixed role. She said MNCs will usually give the chance to higher level people like senior executives and managers, but because she is in this programme, she is given the opportunity to be involved in more things.

A personal tribute to Dr Toh Chin Chye
10 February 2012
Lim Chong Yah, the Albert Winsemius Chair Professor of Economics at NTU has written a tribute, reminiscing his experiences of the late Dr Toh Chin Chye, who was the vice-chancellor of NUS from 1968 to 1975. Dr Toh managed the university as Singapore society and, in particular, the political leadership then, would have liked: To build up a first-rate Singaporean institution of higher learning and research to serve nation-building needs and to supply the higher level manpower needs of a newly-independent, poor society. Prof Lim shared Dr Toh’s basic dream of having a country of my own and which they are proud of, not a poverty-stricken country, or worse, dependent on Western aid for survival. Dr Toh was remembered as a man of courage and conviction. He was also well aware of his position as chairman of the People’s Action Party and never allowed politics to come into the picture in the university.

Abuse at hospitals; Slapped, kicked, shouted at
1 February 2012
Hospitals have reported seeing more cases of physical and verbal abuse committed against health-care workers. Dr Genaro Castro-Vazquez from NTU said the issue of verbal abuse is subjective and might be because medical staff are not used to patients who challenge their decisions. But the assistant professor who teaches a course in medical sociology, acknowledged that patients now have higher expectations of health-care staff, because patients tend to see themselves as clients and medical staff as health-care providers. He added that consumerism may lead to people feeling that they deserve something when they pay for it, and so when they don’t get it, they may get violent.
