INAUGURAL ENGLISH LITERATURE CONFERENCE
IRRESPONSIBILITY
Division of English
The English Division of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, will host a major international literary-studies conference at The Elizabeth Hotel, from 28 to 30 September, 2006.
Conference participants will speak on the theme of "irresponsibility" (see the CFP) in literature, literary criticism, and literary theory, a theme prompted by the so-called "ethical turn" in contemporary criticism. Three of the most influential and widely-recognized scholars in the field have been invited to give major talks at the conference. These speakers will make the conference one of the most important humanities events in Asia in 2006.
Shirley Chew, Emeritus Professor at the University of Leeds, and Visiting Professor at NTU in 2006, will deliver the welcome address.
J. Hillis Miller, former president of the Modern Language Association, Emeritus Distinguished Professor of English and Comparative Literature at University of California, Irvine, will deliver the Plenary address.
Eugene O'Brien, Head of Department and Professor of English at the University of Limerick, will deliver the keynote address.
The conference is intended as the first in a series of major conferences that will bring together international scholars of English Literature to present and discuss their research. The series is organized by the Division of English at NTU with a view to increasing the profile of NTU and Singapore as a centre for Humanities Studies in Asia.
The Conference will be held at The Elizabeth Hotel, Singapore. For booking information use the attached reservation form and send it to johnyap@theelizabeth.com.sg
